A passenger was killed, and a driver was seriously injured after a single-vehicle DUI crash around Alta Sierra, Nevada County, early Sunday morning, April 21, 2024.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal incident happened just before 2:15 a.m. on Highway 49, north of Oak Drive.
Officers said that a 2016 Volkswagen Passat was traveling northbound on Highway 49 when the car suddenly drifted off to the right side of the roadway after a slow right curve. The vehicle then struck several oak trees and stumbled down a steep embankment before coming to a stop on its right side, about 45 feet from where it was when it slid.
The Volkswagen had two occupants when the accident occurred. The passenger, 23-year-old Kasey P., was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver, 23-year-old Isabella C., suffered major injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
It was later found out that the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested for drunk driving.
Additional information was not immediately available. Police work is underway.
