According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 8 p.m. on Meridian Road east of Revilla Drive.

Authorities said a 37-year-old Castroville man was driving a Volkswagen sedan westbound at a high rate of speed when the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a tree.

The car was carrying three juvenile passengers from Castroville: a 16-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy, and a 7-year-old boy.

CHP said the 16-year-old died as a result of the crash. The driver suffered suspected major injuries and was taken to a local hospital, while the 14-year-old and 7-year-old were transported to a San Jose hospital with suspected moderate injuries.

CHP said alcohol and speed are believed to have been factors in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
