[03-29-2026] San Diego County, CA – Two Killed After Vehicle Plunges Off Bridge in Chula Vista.webpTwo people were killed after a vehicle lost control and went off a bridge on a freeway interchange in Chula Vista early Sunday morning, March 29, 2026.

The California Highway Patrol and the Chula Vista Police Department responded to the crash shortly before 1:00 a.m. 

A Jeep was traveling westbound on State Route 54, transitioning to southbound Interstate 5, when it went off the bridge and landed in the Sweetwater River.

Authorities stated that a witness reported seeing the vehicle leave the roadway, emitting sparks, before it fell into the river. A good Samaritan and a police officer attempted to rescue the driver and passenger but were unsuccessful.

Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene, and the interchange remained closed until about 7:30 a.m.

Drunk driving is suspected to have contributed to the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.
