According to the Long Beach Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 7:24 p.m. at the intersection of Palo Verde Avenue and Atherton Street.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a 2015 Toyota Camry was traveling northbound on Palo Verde Avenue when it struck the pedestrian, who was walking eastbound in the roadway.

Emergency responders from the Long Beach Fire Department provided medical aid at the scene before transporting the pedestrian to a local hospital, where he was initially listed in critical but stable condition.

The victim, identified as 77-year-old Long Beach resident Carleton C., succumbed to his injuries while hospitalized.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Investigators stated that speed and reckless driving are not considered factors in the collision.

The incident remains under investigation.
