Two people were killed after a single-vehicle crash caused a car to catch fire south of Chico city limits, early Sunday, January 25, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred near Dayton Road and Owen Lane.
Authorities reported that a 2012 Nissan was traveling south at a high rate of speed, left the roadway, and struck two trees. The vehicle then caught fire, trapping the occupants inside.
CHP said a passing motorist was able to rescue one person from the driver’s area, who suffered serious injuries.
CAL FIRE Butte Unit crews extinguished the flames and later discovered two people deceased inside the vehicle. The injured survivor was transported to a hospital for medical treatment.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Coroner is working to determine the identities of the deceased.
CHP stated the investigation is ongoing, including whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
