A 23-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Nice, Lake County, on Friday night, January 23, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol Clear Lake Area Office, officers were dispatched to a reported traffic collision involving a pedestrian on Highway 20, west of Howard Avenue.
CHP Officer Corey Burgess was the first to arrive at the scene and discovered an adult woman lying unresponsive in the roadway. Emergency personnel initiated lifesaving measures, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary information from CHP indicated that the pedestrian was crossing Highway 20 from south to north within a marked crosswalk at Howard Avenue at the time of the collision.
Authorities identified the driver as 64-year-old Brannon K. of Clearlake, who was driving a gray 2012 Honda Ridgeline westbound on Highway 20. Investigators stated that the driver did not stop or take evasive action prior to the crash for reasons that remain under investigation.
Officials said the driver stopped immediately after the incident, contacted emergency services, remained at the scene, and cooperated with investigators.
CHP reported that the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It was not immediately known whether impairment was a factor for the pedestrian.
The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
