According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. when a silver Nissan was driving westbound on SR-4. 

Witnesses reported that the driver was driving recklessly and nearly collided head-on with eastbound traffic multiple times. CHP officials said the driver lost control of the vehicle, veered off the south side of the roadway, overturned, and landed on its roof in the water.

Several bystanders were able to extricate the driver and passenger from the vehicle. The passenger was transported to San Joaquin County General Hospital, where they later died from their injuries. The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI and booked into the county jail.
